American Pit Bull Dog Character, Attitude & Care

Although colloquially some dogs of similar stature called “Pit Pull”, but only the American Pit Bull Dog bears the name officially – and only in the US because European clubs do not recognize the breed as an independent. In most cases, European “pit bulls” are American Stafford shire terriers or half-breeds. What is common to all pit bulls, however, is that they have a bad reputation as a “fighting dog”.

History of American Pit Bull Dog

Although most dog friends know the term “pit bull”, it is often not clear which dog is meant. This is also because the FCI, the largest international dog kennel association, has not yet recognized the breed as an independent. To understand this, we look back at the past of the Pit Bull, about which his name already tells us a lot: The origin of the breeding aspirations lies in the USA, where the breed originated from crosses between British bulldogs and terriers. From these intersections emerged the breed American Stafford shire Terrier, shortly called “Am Staff”.

The goal of the selective breeding was above all a good four-legged fighter, who should prove himself in the so-called “Pit”, the arena for animal fights. For example, “pit bulls” were hounded on rats to kill as many rats as possible in a given time. Fights against other dogs were also on the agenda for a long time. The “pit bulls” were, after all, the American Stafford shire Terriers who were used in battles, that is, the “working dogs”. For them, it was more about the dubious character from today’s point of view: Other dogs were preferred to aggressive animals with a low stimulus threshold, the appearance was negligible.

That’s why the majority of American Pit Bull Terriers are very similar to the American Stafford shire Terrier, however, optical aberrations may also occur. In 1898, the newly formed United Kennel Club (UKC), which until today does not cooperate with the FCI, recognized the American Pit Bull Terrier as an independent breed. For a long time, there were also intersections between Am Staffs and Pit Bulls.

In the rest of the world and colloquially in the US, “Pit Bull” developed as a generic term for Fighting dogs in general. Unfortunately, in many countries and despite prohibitions, there are still dogfights and, accordingly, still animals that are “bred” specifically for participation in such cruel spectacles.

Pit Bull Character

The legacy of cruel dogfights, on the one hand, irresponsible owners on the other, have discredited the Pit Bull. The truth is: poorly socialized Pit Bulls can show a high degree of aggressiveness towards humans and animals because they are unflinching and basically just what they were bred for, namely “ready to fight”.
In the relationship to humans, the breed is generally very subordinate, which was already important for the inglorious animal combat times, because the four-legged friends had to be able to be separated from a person from the fight, without the biped attacked has been.
As with most of these “fighting dogs”, the pit bull shows that the danger emanates from the other end of his leash. Thus, carefully socialized Pit Bulls are considered meek and, with their intelligent nature and their playfulness, are excellent dogs for sporty families and great companions for children.

As guards, they are not suitable because of their submission readiness. Basically, in this breed – or this breed variant – always origin, Socialization, and education are crucial factors for a relaxed coexistence. If one of these pillars wobbles, the dog can become a danger – newcomers should never take this risk.

Education is an expert thing

Pit Bull Education is an expert thing

In any case, a pit bull needs dog-experienced and prudent owners, for whom dog training is no new territory. This should include a thorough and early socialization against other dogs and humans. Also, it is always important for these four-legged friends to have a clear and consistent, and of course non-violent, leadership, otherwise, Pit Bulls will try to take first place in the ranking.

This can have fatal consequences for an animal with the described plants. Be sure to visit a puppy play lesson with a young Pit Bull to get used to dealing with different dogs. Visiting a connected dog school can also be very helpful.

American Pit Bull Terriers may have a tendency to hip dyspepsia. This risk can be minimized by appropriate breeding examinations and the risk of hip osteoarthritis can be reduced by maintaining a normal weight.
The breed also has a predisposition to canine discommode, a skin disease caused by excessive infestation with the hair follicle mite. Also known as skin irritations may be various allergies that may affect the Pit Bull. Overall, however, it is a robust four-legged friend, who can be around 12 years old with good care.

Pit Bull Maintenance
The coat of the breed is short and easy to care for: Brush the coat once a week. You already get used to the ritual of your puppy – most dogs enjoy caring pats. You should bathe your companions only in an absolute emergency and with a mild dog shampoo because the skin flora of short-haired breeds regenerates only slowly.
Regularly check the length of the claws and shorten them if necessary with claw scissors. Often this is necessary, if at all, only in old age. Some dog owners brush their dogs daily – and to get used to puppy age – with dog toothpaste and a special dog toothbrush teeth to prevent tartar. Alternatively, you can use dental care snacks or dry chewing articles like dried beef ears.
